Deep Japan

This cannot be done in Kyoto or Kamakura.

The Zen of Seiun-ji Temple did not flourish in the capitals of Kyoto or Kamakura.

On the contrary, it began with practitioners who distanced themselves from those in power, refused the positions of head priests at major temples, and retreated into the mountains, believing that true training could only be achieved away from the secular world.

This is not a temple of buildings and Buddhist statues. The garden itself is the temple. People lived in the garden and practiced Zen meditation on the sacred rocks found there.

It is not a garden meant for viewing, like those often found in Kyoto. It is a garden for Zazen—a garden for ascetic practice.
